Anglo-American research on the human genome represented by Uncle Sam and John Bull knitting DNA
Bill Sanderson | Graphic | Human Genome Project
This irreverent work by illustrator Bill Sanderson captures the spirit of endeavour and collaboration that was at the heart of the project, and how the project was presented, from its very beginnings. In it, the lead participants, the UK and the USA, patiently knit a coil of DNA, which is secured to the outline of a nematode worm (C. elegans). The sequencing of the nematode was already underway and provided a test bed for the techniques used for the larger and more complex challenge of sequencing the human genome.
