Wellcome Library | Graphic | Human Genome Project
Although an international project with 16 participant countries, the lead institutions were the Sanger Centre, led by John Sulston, and Bob Waterston’s team at Washington University in St Louis. The Sanger Centre made the largest single contribution to the Human Genome Project. This illustration highlights the chromosomes sequenced here in the UK. These are chromosomes 1, 6, 9, 10, 13, 20, 22 and X. Chromosome 22 was the first to be completed, in 1998.
