In March 2020 when the world was going into global lockdown, a small number of staff at the Wellcome Sanger Institute were embarking on a UK-wide collective effort to sequence, and understand an unknown deadly virus. Since it’s inception Project Heron, Wellcome Sanger Institute’s contribution to the national COG-UK consortium, has sequenced millions of COVID-19 genomes. It has helped to map the spread of the virus, predict outbreaks and identify threatening variants.
