Wellcome Connecting Science | Graphic | Empowering People: Genetic Counselling in Focus

The right next steps at the end of an initial genetic counselling appointment will depend on the details of the particular case and the decision-making of the individual. This could be to take a genetic test, to make the next steps regarding a condition in another part of the healthcare sys-tem, or to talk about the outcomes with family members. A genetic counsellor will offer guid-ance about the process but the decision-making rests with the individual.

A key part of a genetic counsellor’s skillset is to support a person through the complex lan-guage, steps and choices so that they feel equipped with knowledge and empowered to make a decision that is right for them at that time.
